Today’s Gospel in Mark is a story of liberation and true freedom. Not a wordly, physical freedom from oppression (be if from the Babylonians or Romans) such as Israel expected, but a freedom from death
and sin.

John the Baptist by making reference to Isaiah is announcing the coming of Christ. Christ who is the REAL son of God and true messiah and who comes to revolutionize history, to break the chains that are oppressing us and to re-create the world.

This story is a liberating story to all of us who are enslaved by sin, imprisoned by our vices and lost in the forest of our iniquity. God has come to find and liberate us, captive Israel in a very spiritual sense.

The past 4 gospels have carried this same wonderful but cautious message. We must be ready, we must repent and prepare our hearts.

And so we prepare in this second week of advent for our true messiah. He who washes our sins and baptizes us not with water, but with the Holy Spirit.

Are you ready? Are you preparing yourself?
He’s almost here!

In this first week of advent, the readings present us with two main themes.

The first is that of the Potter and the Clay. God is the maker, the potter that continually shapes us, working and molding us into the people he wishes us to be. As long as clay is moist, subtle and flexible to the touch, the potter can mold the clay relatively easily.

Well how is it that we can be good, flexible,
workable clay in our master’s hands?

In St. Irenaeus’ own words:

Since you are the work of God, wait patiently for the hand of your Artist, who does all things at the right time. Present to him a supple and docile heart, and keep the form that this Artist gave you, having in yourself the water that comes from him and without which you would become hard and would reject the imprint of his fingers.By letting yourself be formed by him, you will rise to perfection, for through this art of God, the clay that is in you will be hidden; his hand created your substance… (Against Heresies)

Its only when clay becomes dry, brittle and resistant to the touch does it break and becomes unworkable. When this happens, the potter must start again, breaking us and reshaping us. Could it be that the bumps and bruises in our life have been as a result of our own refusal to be shaped? Could it be that the circumstances in our life be the kiln that hardens us into the shape God wants us to be?

The second image we are presented with, this time in the Gospel of Mathew 25, is to be watchful and alert for the return of our Mater.

We are called to be in ready expectation of the Lord of the house. We must be actively watching, preparing our hearts, just like in the past two gospel readings of the Parable of the Talents and the 10 Virgins.

So what must we take away from these messages?

I challenge you and me in this time of christmas to have a renewed and docile heart, open to God’s shaping of you while waiting for his coming. We don’t know the time and hour, and so lets remain vigilant at all times.

The Potter and the Clay

In this sunday of Christ the King, we are challenged by the gospel to live a truly authentic christianity by unselfishly serving others. In essence, we are called to tend to our Shepherd’s flock following the Lord’s example in Ezequiel 34. This first reading is that of the pastor that rescues his sheep, find them when the stray, seeks them out and heals them when sick or injured.

The second reading in 1 Corinthians presents Christ as king, sovereign over every authority and power, who brings everything to life and destroys death. This is confirmed by the Gospel in Matthew 25 where God is both shepherd and king. We are the nations that assemble before him, and he, as the ultimate judge separates us into sheep (the blessed) and goats (the cursed).

Sheep are those that serve the less unfortunate by feeding, clothing them, healing them, visiting them in prison and following his example. In doing all these things, we are serving God himself. The goats symbolize those that selfishly do not help others. The sheep inherit the greatest gift that is the kingdom of God while the goats are cursed and sent into eternal fire.

This should convict us to examine our own life and question ourselves,

how will we be judged at the end of our lives?</3h>

Will we be the selfish goats that were cast out or
will we be the sheep that were blessed?

We are each born with unique gifts and talents. Some are musical, others creative, others are intelligent and others are born with more opportunities in Life.

What about you? What’s your gift?

God has entrusted you and me with those talents and calls us to use them, to be bold and to be risk-takers.

As christians, we are called to be much more than “non-sinners”. We can’t just sit still letting our gifts go to waste. If you think about it, there really is no middle ground. We are either moving forward and using our gifts or we are moving backwards and squandering them. Faith without movement, just like water, becomes stagnant. We lose our gifts if we refuse to use them.

Are you like the two servants in the Gospel that took the risk and multiplied their talents, or are you the third servant that buried his talent in the ground for fear of losing it?

The Worthy Wife

To kick off the series, we have the stunning artwork of Lawrence Klimecki of Gryphon Rampant, an artist, illustrator, and graphic designer working out of northern California. He publishes his work through Gryphon Rampant, a company he founded in 1995. His work ranges from corporate identity packages to sacred art that adorns churches throughout the world. His clients include one-person entrepreneurial companies, non-profit organizations, and religious institutions. In 2008 Lawrence was ordained a deacon in the Roman Catholic diocese of Sacramento.

Through art and design, drawing on ancient artistic traditions, he re-presents traditional Christian art in new and vibrant ways and shows how art can help us explore who we are and how we cope with the struggles of our daily lives.

Many people in this day and age are overly preoccupied with the “end times”, apocalypse or the second coming of Christ. Recently two dates where declared by Harold Camping to be the end of the world. Those days came and went and like all the other end of the word predictions were proven false. Did you know that not even Jesus knows the date and the time? Only our Father God knows. See Matthew 24:36.

So shouldn’t the question be, are we waiting foolishly or wisely for the coming of the bridegroom (God)?

This week we read about the 5 wise virgins (bridesmaids) that kept their lamps well stocked with oil, as well as the five virgins that neglected their lamps. When the groom came, the wise virgins were prepared, while the foolish virgins were left behind.

So how can we keep our own lamp well-stocked with oil, in order to keep lit the flame of our faith?

We do this through prayer, the sacraments, the study of the word of God, and serving our fellow man through service and acts of mercy. In this way, we are wisely prepared in these “in-between” times and won’t be caught off-guard when the groom comes.
